What is DLT Registration?
Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) is a blockchain-based registration system implemented by TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) to control spam SMS and protect consumers from fraudulent messages. If you want to send bulk SMS in India, DLT registration is mandatory.
Why is DLT Mandatory?
TRAI introduced DLT to create a transparent system where every message sender and header (Sender ID) is verified. This ensures:
- Reduction in spam and fraud messages
- Traceability of message sources
- Consumer protection from unsolicited communication
Step-by-Step DLT Registration Process
Step 1: Register as an Entity (Principal Entity)
You need to register your business on any of the operator DLT portals (Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL, etc.). The data is shared across all operators, so registering on one is sufficient.
Documents Required:
- Business PAN Card
- GST Certificate / Tan / Shop Act License
- Authorized Signatory Proof (Aadhar/PAN/Voter ID)
- Authorization Letter on Company Letterhead
Step 2: Register your Header (Sender ID)
Once your entity is approved (takes 24-48 hours), you can login and register your headers.
- Promotional: 6-digit number (e.g., 563829) for marketing.
- Transactional/Service: 6-alpha characters (e.g., ONLSMS, HDFCBK) for alerts and OTPs.
Step 3: Register Content Templates
Every SMS content must be approved. You need to register templates with variables for dynamic content.
Example Template: "Your OTP for login is {#var#}. Do not share this with anyone. - OnlineSMSService"
